Context: Education and the Rural Student
At its core, education is a fundamental human right recognized by international law (the Universal Declaration of Human Rights). But for many, especially those living in rural areas, access to education is severely limited by a host of practical issues. These issues become a sorter between those that have opportunities for success and those that will likely remain in poverty.
Approximately half of the world lives in rural areas. Africa and Asia alone account for 90% of the world’s rural population. Students in rural areas face the challenges of poverty and poorly funded schools – and in addition, a lack of transportation. Their ability to attend school, even the local school, is limited by physical distance. A quality education is out of their reach.
Given this context, how can we effectively provide quality education to those living in rural Africa?
IFGI has been exploring this question for 9 years, resulting in 2 concurrent programs: TERuSA: Transforming Education in South Africa and AESA: Access Education South Africa.
TERuSA: Transforming Education in South Africa
TERuSA is IFGI’s longest running program; we assumed management in 2014. All children of the families who worked on a rural farm in Roodekrans, South Africa were invited to participate in an educational program that provided access to a quality education. In the early days of TERuSA, our participants were day students – arriving at school each morning and returning home late afternoon. Because of the rural nature of townships and farms, this meant that our participants walked 2.5 miles of difficult dirt roads from their homes to the nearest paved road, where our transportation would pick them up and take them to school almost two hours away. They commuted to and from school each day, three hours each way. This was not a sustainable schedule, so in 2015 we moved to a boarding school model where each student is transported to school on Sunday evenings, and returned home on Friday afternoons. Boarding at the school also allows for enhanced nutrition and participation in extra-curricular activites.
These children attend different schools, depending on age and interests. One of this year’s participants attends a high school with an agricultural focus, another attends an English Language boarding school.
TERuSA is a collaborative effort between IFGI and a nonprofit organization in Johannesburg, South Africa, Investing for Innovation (IFI). We are thrillled with our partnership – their engagement with the students, their families, and the schools make this program work.
In 2023, we have 5 students in TERuSA: three 6th grade students; one 8th grade student; and one 9th grade student. We are committed to supporting these children until they complete their K-12 education.
AESA: Access Education South Africa
The AESA program began in 2022, and identifies potential program candidates through local schools. Students who demonstrate both academic potenial and financial need can apply for IFGI sponsorship to attend an approved High School/ Boarding School in the Johannesburg, South Africa region.
TERuSA is also a collaborative effort between IFGI and a nonprofit organization in Investing for Innovation (IFI). Their engagement with the students, their families, and the schools make this program work.
For 2024, we have 3 students in AESA: Two at Krugersdorp High and one attending Glenwood in Durban. Our goal is to expand this program to support 25 students.
Please help us continue our efforts to provide a quality education to children in rural South Africa so they are empowered to make a difference in their communities.
